Getting a Boat or PWC Licence in Queensland: Everything You Need to Know
Queensland is home to some of Australia's most beautiful waterways—whether you’re exploring Moreton Bay, fishing off the Gold Coast, or cruising through the Whitsundays, having the right licence is essential. If you're looking to operate a recreational boat or personal watercraft (PWC) like a jetski, this guide will help you navigate the process of getting licensed in Queensland.
Do I Need a Licence?
Yes. In Queensland, you're required by law to hold a marine licence if you want to operate:
-
A recreational boat powered by an engine over 4.5kW (6hp)
-
A personal watercraft (PWC) such as a jetski
Even if you have previous experience, a licence ensures you understand local rules, safety procedures, and how to handle emergency situations.
Types of Marine Licences in Queensland
There are two main types of recreational marine licences:
-
Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL) – For operating boats
-
Personal Watercraft Licence (PWCL) – For operating PWCs like jetskis
✅ Note: You must obtain an RMDL before or at the same time as a PWCL. You can't get a PWCL alone.
